Best Ways to Get Outside and Stay Active This Summer

After months spent indoors due to the colder season and quarantine, the summer months are the perfect time to return to the outdoor activities we love. Whether you’re into hiking with friends or gardening with the family, the outdoors provides countless opportunities for you to stay active.

If you’re looking for ways to exercise outside, the options are endless. Running or walking around your neighborhood is a great place to start. If you have trouble staying motivated, try finding a friend to run or walk with you. The summer season usually brings 5k races that you can participate in within your community. Maybe running isn’t your favorite way to stay active – and if that’s the case, you’re not alone. Cycling is another great option and can be a less strenuous way to get some exercise and is easier on your joints. Try taking a bike ride through your neighborhood or town and explore some places you’ve never been before.

A less obvious way to still get that exercise in is by gathering up a group of friends and starting a game of basketball or volleyball at the park. Some parks have recreational sports leagues that meet throughout the summer and are always welcoming new members. Or take a family trip to your neighborhood’s pool or nearest lake for some swimming, which is a fantastic way to get some exercise while cooling off in the summer heat.

There are plenty of ways to stay active outside that don’t feel like exercise. Take yard work for example; as you’re trimming bushes, mowing the lawn, or watering the plants, you’re using more energy than you may realize. Gardening is another great way to stay active while doing something you enjoy. If you don’t have a garden yet, starting one may be a fun summer project that can encourage you to spend more time outside.

As you stay active outdoors this summer, be sure to stay hydrated and watch for any potential signs of dehydration. Always wear sunscreen and don’t forget to give your body the necessary time to rest after strenuous workouts or activities. Your local First Care Clinic wishes you a safe and happy summer, full of fun outdoor activities that keep you moving and healthy!
