How to Make (& Keep) Your New Year’s Resolution

As 2022 approaches, many of us begin thinking about new goals we want to work towards in the new year. Unfortunately, we do not always follow through with these resolutions. Keep reading below for tips to help you get started on sticking to your New Year’s Resolution.

Small Steps Lead to Success

When deciding on a goal, reflect on your past year’s behavior. Think about how you can improve and what changes you can make to better yourself. Do not look at your goal as one big picture. Instead, break your goal up into small pieces and take it one step at a time. Instead of saying your goal is to work out every day, start small and aim to work out for thirty minutes twice a week. This prevents you from getting overwhelmed and straying away from your goal.

Choose a Specific, Achievable Goal

By choosing a realistic goal, you have a greater chance of keeping your resolution throughout the year. Think of a doable and concrete goal. If your goal is too vague, you will not have a realistic plan to make you successful. Your goals should be SMART. In 1981, the journal Management Review coined the acronym SMART for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

Share Your Goals

Tell your friends and family about your resolution. Sharing your goals will give you support. You may even find someone working towards the same goal, and you can motivate each other. Your friends and family will cheer you on and hold you accountable.
